Why We Built It
We were running enrichment workflows for our agency clients through Clay. The product is genuinely excellent — the waterfall logic, the UI, the provider ecosystem. We had no complaints about the tool itself.
The complaints were about the bill.
We were paying Hunter.io, Apollo.io, Clearbit, and People Data Labs a combined $432 per month. Then we were paying Clay $349 per month on top of that to sit between us and those same APIs. Total: $781 per month to access data we already owned.
And it was not just the total amount. It was the unpredictability. Credits ran out at the worst time. Top-up credits cost 50% more than the plan rate. Failed lookups burned credits just the same as successful ones. Every time we ran a test workflow, we were watching a number count down.
In March 2026, Clay announced a full pricing overhaul — collapsing six plans into two tiers and splitting credits into "Data" and "Actions". Legacy customers had until April 10 to migrate. That was the moment we decided to stop complaining and start building.
